Justifiable fury at the loss of innocent lives in Gaza shouldn’t lead to the destruction of millions of innocent lives here at home.

With polls showing that Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are running even in nearly every swing state, this election will turn on the decisions of very small subsets of voters. One of those subsets surely isn’t contemplating voting for Trump, but may end up electing him anyway.

I refer to those voters so understandably appalled by Israel’s war on Gaza and the toll it’s taken in innocent lives that they may not vote, or vote for Jill Stein, as a way of protesting the Biden administration’s continued provision of arms for Netanyahu’s war, and Harris’s refusal to cleanly break with that policy.

It’s by no means clear how not voting for Harris will stop Israel’s destruction of Gaza and the attendant slaughter of innocent lives. It is perfectly clear, however, that it will imperil millions of innocent lives right here in the USA should it lead to a Trump victory.

 

I refer to the immigrants among us whose forced deportation is the fundamental plank in Trump’s platform, the one issue he stresses in every one of his otherwise disjointed speeches, the sine qua non of his pledge to make America great again. To accomplish that deportation, he’s made clear he’d order the National Guard to sweep through immigrant-heavy neighborhoods, and might well order the Army to clear out areas like the Bronx, East Los Angeles, and Chicago’s West Side as well.

SAN FRANCISCO – Just after U.S. Senate candidate Kevin de León and incumbent Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s met on stage this afternoon, Communications Director Jonathan Underland made the following statement:

“The historic debate we witnessed today is testament to the unprecedented strength of Senator de León’s challenge and exposed just how starkly the values of the two candidates differ. It is shocking that California’s senior senator would dismiss the value of organizing and peaceful protests. Saying that ‘it doesn’t do anything’ and that we should focus on winning elections ignores a basic truth: You have to build coalitions to make real change. Senator de León, who cut his teeth organizing the largest civil rights protest in state history against Prop 187, knows that organizing and coordinating with the grassroots is vital to California’s success in Congress.”

IMMIGRATION REFORM OVERDUE…

• Senator Feinstein claims that “immigration reform is long overdue.” But in 1993, Senator Feinstein said that “whether it’s a space for a job, a space is a home, a place in a classroom, it becomes a competition for space… The people who should be here are those who come legally.” [C-SPAN, 9/17/93].

• And even now, “for immigration advocates rushing to beat back congressional momentum to crack down on so-called ‘sanctuary cities,’ their chief worry isn’t the Republicans who control Capitol Hill. It’s Sen. Dianne Feinstein.” [Politico, 8/03/15].

SO OVERDUE, DE LEÓN HAS PICKED UP THE SLACK

• During the PPIC discussion today, Sen. Feinstein said she "just learned" that there are multiple family detention facilities in CA. Senator de León – pictured here marching on the Otay Mesa Detention Center with religious leaders this past June – has been fighting to keep immigrant families together since long before it became a hashtag: In 2012, his SB 1064 broke down barriers to reunite detained and deported Californians with their children.

If Millennials Vote- We win.

 The critical elections of 2018 will determine if the Congress can put the brakes on Donald Trump, his allies, and the Koch-Adelson agenda. The question is, will enough people turn out to vote?

According to Pew Research surveys, 2018s will see a record turnout of 18- 34 year olds for a mid term election.  More, 57% of millennials who are registered plan to vote for Democrats and only 37 % for Republicans.  I have no measure of how the decline to state voters will vote. 

Given the enthusiasm of youth for common sense social democratic proposals as shown by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, we can hope that young people will vote left. 

People who are unlikely to vote make up some 50% of the population. 

 If Millennials don’t vote- we lose.

Los Angeles teachers vote on whether to authorize a strike. ThinkProgress: “On Thursday, Los Angeles teachers begin voting on whether to authorize a strike. While an authorization doesn’t mean that the strike will take place right away, if the union chooses to strike, it would be the first since a nine-day strike in 1989. It may also be the biggest action since 2009, when thousands of Los Angeles teachers called in sick after hearing about possible teacher layoffs. The voting process will end on August 30. The teachers union, United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), says it has been at an impasse with the Los Angeles Unified School District for some time. Teachers are asking for smaller class sizes, reductions in standardized testing, a 2 percent bonus, 6.5 percent salary increases and a $500 stipend for materials and supplies, according to California News Wire Services. Teachers are also interested in expanding charter school accountability, spending more money on ethnic studies and bilingual education, and creating school climate and discipline plans, according to a recent open letter from the union.”

Hillary Clinton  won California by 4.3 million votes. Turnout over 75%

Bill Fletcher: “It is important to approach any examination of the November election with a degree of nuance. As widely noted, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by what now appears to be at least two million votes. The Libertarian and Green Parties received far more votes than the margin of victory in no less than eleven states, including Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Hillary Clinton won the election by 2 million votes, but Donald Trump won the Presidency in the Electoral College. What’s that you say about democracy ?


During the last year the according to the Southern Poverty Law Center the militant, fascist, militarist, racist terrorist group Storm Front has grown to over 300,000 members. ( one of several such groups).


These and parallel developments may require that we reconsider and adjust our basic political strategy. We need a serious new analysis because the terrain of our struggle and our activity has shifted significantly.


Examples.


Some 2 -11 million immigrant workers in the US now face terrorism and possible deportation. Over 2 million U.S. citizen children face the possibility that their parents will be deported and they will be placed in foster care.

The labor movement faces its most difficult assault since the passage of the Taft-Hartley act which changed the nature of organized labor in the U.S.

The Trump administration’s chief military advisor advocates siding with Asad and Putin in Syria, and usually recommends U.S. military interventions in troubled areas.


This militarist approach could well set us back to the decades of U.S. intervention from 2000- 2010. The U.S. anti war movement , or what remains of it, will have their backs to the wall.


The ecological justice movement now faces a regime that take us back to the 1970’s on ignoring climate change. – while the environmental crisis grows. As Nomi Klein said, “This Changes Everything”.














This short list, and similar ones including the privatization of public education ( see below), show that the political terrain upon which we operate has dramatically shifted. Doing more of the same, or being more confrontational alone is not an adequate response.


We need a re-evaluation of our basic strategy and how we fit into developing a left resistance to the rise of neo fascism and Trumpism.


I see that Freedom Road has a piece out on this relating this period to the imposition of terrorism that ended the first Reconstruction era.


Best case scenario: Trump is elected, the Republicans gained control of all three branches of government.


Worse case. Trump is elected, Republicans gain control of all three branches of government. They use their power to organize a substantial power shift and the creation of an authoritarian, racist state.


The difference between the best case and the worse case is how we organize and resist.
