TL;DR What We’ve Done In July, we were lucky to have three guest speakers at our meeting who detailed their efforts in supporting OUR RIGHT TO VOTE in different ways. We learned how we can contribute to their efforts. Happy Back-to-School Season! Wow! Summers always pass so quickly, don’t they? That final bell closing out the spring still echoes even as the first day of fall semester is right around the corner. We’re all either decorating classrooms, stocking library shelves, loading digital content, or figuring out how to pack lunches 5 days a week— we’ve all got a role to play and tasks screaming for our attention. That’s why the August meeting for Educators Resist has been cancelled. It would have fallen on the first day back to school, and that just seemed a bit much. We’ll be back to our regular schedule in September.  Protecting & Strengthening Democracy Takes ALL of Us. How can you help? There’s a level of engagement for every type; even if you’ve never before engaged, there’s a place for you! And we never go it alone. You’ll have all the support and comaraderie you need.  Canvassing Canvassing is all about direct community engagement. It works like this: Meet up ahead of canvassing and receive training on a given candidate or issue.  Pair or team up and spread out across specific, vetted neighborhoods to knock on the doors of friendly potential voters, meaning, you won’t be tasked with talking to people with drastically different views.  Stay above the fray: we’re not trying to get into fiery debates; the goal is simply to raise the awareness of the importance of voting in folks who likely already agree with democratic positions.  It’s really a lot of fun and makes a BIG impact! There’s a kick-off meeting and training August 6th, but if you miss that one, don’t worry! There are plenty of opportunities to get filled in. September Meeting Senior to Senior Voter Registration Senior to senior is an active voter registration and pre-registration drive that takes place at high schools around the county.  Seniors (those over 60yo) are trained in how to pre-register (depending on age) and register high school seniors.  Taking place in high school government classes, the students are primed and ready to participate in the national conversation.  If you’re interested in becoming part of the crew that performs this essential and rewarding work, please reach out to Libbie Coleman at  libcoleman@gmail.com  In Conversation with College Students Cathryn dedicates her time to setting up tables at Sacramento City College to help educate students on the importance of voting and she’d LOVE our help!  You can join her at her table, or establish one of your own at a different campus — she’ll be happy to help you get started!  Reach out to Cathryn at  catlobbyteam@icloud.com Help Us Get to Know You :) Even though we’ve met lots of you and even worked closely with some of you, it feels like there’s more.  Join the Immigrant Justice Summer Training Series

When ICE comes to your community, do you know what to do? This summer, Indivisible is giving you a blueprint. 

Immigrant Justice Summer is a five-call national training series that will level up how you show up for immigrant justice. You’ll learn how to build up hyper-local networks and connect to experienced organizations to respond to ICE surges or new concentration camps in your area. 

With ICE buying up warehouses and anti-immigration agencies turbocharged by the GOP’s recent infusion of $70 billion into their coffers, we all need to be prepared. 

By the end of our series, you’ll be equipped to mount a safe, immigrant-aligned response when there’s an emergency action needed in your community to protect your neighbors from Trump’s detention and deportation regime.

Schools must be safe havens, welcoming places of learning, free from racism and the threat of deportations.

• Strengthen your local connections and neighborhood response systems. Join local mutual aid efforts, sign up for grocery deliveries, or find other ways to help your neighbors.
• Create space for grief, solidarity, and collective action. 
• Join or start a local rapid response network, so that your community is prepared to mobilize quickly against a new detention facility, a new surge in militarized enforcement from the regime, or other threats posed to you and your neighbors.
• Paint murals, create art installations, host cookouts, and highlight joy in this fight to assert the dignity of our immigrant friends and family members. 
• Support immigrant-led organizations working on the ground; follow their lead and where appropriate propose tangible ways you could help with their next initiative.

 

 

 

The Resistance Shows Its Strength -Sacramento

 

Today, millions of Americans flooded the streets to demand an end to Trump’s authoritarian power grab. We expected hundreds of thousands. But at virtually every single event, the crowds eclipsed our estimates. And it’s not over -- people are still marching in some West Coast cities and heading to events in Alaska and Hawaii.  This is the largest day of protest since Trump retook office. And in many small towns and cities, activists are reporting the biggest protests their communities have ever seen as everyday people send a clear, unmistakable message to Trump and Musk: Hands off our healthcare, hands off our civil rights, hands off our schools, our freedoms, and our democracy.  There've been protests in red states, blue states, purple states, DC, and US territories. Outside the United States, too, with protesters showing solidarity in the UK, Portugal, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, and the Netherlands. A glimpse of what we’re seeing at a few of the 1,300+ protests across the country:  Boston, MA For many, many more #HandsOff photos, check out our Instagram and Blueskyaccounts.  The Trump administration has spent its first 75 days in office trying to overwhelm us, to make us feel powerless, so that we will fall in line, accept the ransacking of our government, the raiding of our social safety net, and the dismantling of our democracy.  And too often, the response from our leaders and those in positions to resist has been abject cowardice. Compliance. Obeying in advance.  But not today. Today we've demonstrated a different path forward. We've modeled the courage and action that we want to see from our leaders, and showed all those who’ve been standing on the sidelines who share our values that they are not alone.  Even more important than the message we’ve sent to Trump, Musk, and MAGA is the signal we’re sending to those who agree with us but have spent the last few months feeling shaken, hopeless, and afraid: The fight for our democracy isn’t over -- it’s just getting going. And whoever they are, wherever they are, we need their voice to win. Today, hundreds of thousands of people attended their first protest of the new Trump era. Hundreds of millions more are going to see coverage of the events or hear about it from your social media posts and want to know how they can get involved. Our ask for you: Tell them. (And if you’re looking to step up your involvement, here’s how YOU can do that, too):  We are stronger when we organize together. Now is the moment for folks to join their local Indivisible group. Indivisible exists to support local organizing. If there’s a part of this country without an Indivisible group -- or if the nearest group isn’t being responsive -- anyone can start a new one. You don’t need to be an expert to get involved. But for anyone looking for a clear “how to” on fighting Trump’s authoritarian vision, we wrote the Indivisible Guide. With Congressional recess coming up and MAGA Republicans plotting to gut Medicaid to pay for tax cuts for the rich, where going to need a LOT more people showing up in their communities to say “hands off!” Anyone interested in joining this next fight can add their names here.
