LA City Council Lurches Even Further Left With Democratic Socialists of America Members

Can they pull so far to the left, Los Angeles ends up in the Pacific Ocean?

With the swearing-in of Hugo Soto-Martinez and Eunisses Hernandez just a couple of weeks ago, the Los Angeles City Council officially became 20 percent socialist.

Soto-Martinez and Hernandez join fellow Democratic Socialists of America member Nithya Raman to now give three of the 15 council seats to DSA members.

Not – for a very long time – known as a hotbed for what could be called conservative policies, the Council now may actually be the most officially Socialist governing agency in the country.

Soto-Martinez in particular stands out. As a potential suspected leaker of the now-notorious audio tape of then-City Council President Nury Martinez, etc. using racist language while discussing how to carve up the city to solidify their power, the DSA greatly benefited from the ensuing uproar. He was one of three DSA members endorsed in the November election – two won.  The DSA also supported Measure ULA – a tax to create more money for the homeless-industrial complex, and Measure R – a rent control ordinance in Pasadena. Both measures passed, as did two – both school board offices – of the three other candidates they supported.

Soto-Martinez spouts the typical woke/left/progressive buzzwords and platitudes, with words and phrases like “centering” and “listening” and organizing” and “equity” and “doing the work” and “root causes” and “systemic” littering his speeches. Read this for a deeper dive on the woke co-opting the language of therapy.

The new councilmember also believes that homelessness is caused first and foremost by financial hardship (not being able to pay the rent because not enough affordable housing exists) and second by addiction issues – a position that beggars the truth and depth and mental health component and human tragedy of the issue.

Capitalism itself also gets a nod as a “root cause” of homelessness and the “commandeering” of hotels is discussed by Soto-Martinez.

Other issues are also at top-of-mind for Soto-Martinez, from public transit to how to get young workers to buy into the idea of “Medicare for All.”

While it may be heartening to some that all, save but one of the videos above have only a few hundred views apiece, the question of outsized influence remains – can the DSA and Hernandez, Raman, and Soto-Martinez pull so far to the left, Los Angeles ends up in the Pacific Ocean?

LOS ANGELES—The site of huge urban uprisings in 1965 and 1992 is once again a city on fire. The current blaze was ignited by revelations about an October 2021 meeting between three Chican@ members of the Los Angeles City Council and the Chican@ head of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor regarding the redistricting of LA’s council districts. In a now-infamous conversation, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, racist remarks were directed against Blacks, Indigenous Oaxacans who live in the city’s Koreatown, Jews, and Armenians. 

 

One of the most outrageous utterances was council president Nury Martinez’s reference to the Black child of white LA councilor Mike Bonin as a “changuito” (monkey) who needed a “beat down.” The political thrust of the discussion was creating new Latin@ council districts—largely at the expense of existing districts that have Black representation. 

 

The three city council members, Martinez, Kevin de Léon, and Gil Cedillo have issued public apologies—and Martinez resigned from the city council on Wednesday. Ron Herrera, the fourth participant in the racist exchange, has resigned as head of the LA Federation of Labor.

Alexa Avilés is a longtime community organizer in South Brooklyn. After a decade as president of the parent-teacher association at her daughters’ school, PS 172, she’s running for New York City Council. Endorsed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, she is running on the New York City Democratic Socialists of America’s (NYC-DSA) DSA for the City city council slate, made up of six DSA members and working-class organizers running on a platform of taking power from the wealthy and giving it to New York’s working class.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, a PAC funded by billionaire real estate developer and Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross issued mailers throughout her district, fearmongering around Avilés’s calls to defund the New York Police Department (NYPD).

Avilés is running in City Council District 38 to represent the South Brooklyn neighborhoods South Slope, Sunset Park, Red Hook, and parts of Borough Park, Dyker Heights, and Windsor Terrace. District 38 is a diverse working-class community, with a large population of immigrants and Puerto Rican and Mexican families, as well as being home to Brooklyn’s Chinatown. According to a study of District 38, it has the highest rate of adults without a high-school degree in New York City and half of its single mothers with young children live in poverty.

Jacobin’s Oren Schweitzer sat down with Avilés to discuss the state of politics in New York City, what it’s like to run on a socialist slate for office, and how she hopes to build working-class power.

Why are you running for city council?

AV

I’ve been asked for many years now by community residents if I would consider running. A few years ago, I noticed that despite how high the stakes are for our community, it felt like our leadership was not putting the community first. It was a “put up or shut up” moment for me. I decided to jump in.

I made the decision to run even before the pandemic hit. Our communities were suffering greatly. Our neighbors were being displaced. Every year, we see increasing displacement where poor people and working-class folks could no longer live in the neighborhood.

We’ve seen unemployment and insecurity, stagnating wages, food insecurity. Coming out of the Trump era, families were being detained and deported by ICE. We’re coming out of a time of fear and insecurity. It felt like we needed steadfast leadership that put people over everything else.

Eric Guerra for City Council

The Sacramento Progressive Alliance supports Eric Guerra for Sacramento City Council, District 6.
Special election.  April 7, 2015.
The Sacramento City Council has not had a Latino member for twenty years. Many  of the Democratic Party clubs are supporting his opponent. Eric was a strong ally of multicultural education while he was President of ASI at Sac State.

The decision was made at our board meeting on Feb.21. 

Outrage from the Tea Party

 There is vehement outrage from the Right on the Sac Bee news site covering the City Council vote 6-1 to boycott Arizona. 

These folks are a small minority pretending to be a majority.  Poizner received some 26% of the Republican vote in the primary with his anti immigrant rhetoric. 
BTW,  You can get much of the same zeal in the letters  by attacking teachers' unions or public sector workers pensions. Not quite as bigotted, but equally vehement. 



 We are in the greatest economic crisis since the 1930's. Part of the problem is the legitimate anxiety of people with few jobs and few opportunities.  The Tea Party activists and their Republican funders, and the anti immigrant activists promote conflicts over issues of immigration, teachers' unions, public workers pensions, and big government as substitutes for a real analysis of economic problems. The  financial crisis was caused by the greed and the theft of a few very rich operatives. The oligarchy caused the unemployment ( not immigrants), the economic losses, the off shoring of production jobs, the cuts in services such as police and fire to families.

Sacramento City Council votes to boycott Arizona

By a vote of 6-1, the Sacramento City Council voted to support the boycott of Arizona over its immigration law. The letter columns of the Bee are afire with threats from Right Wing, anti immigrant extremists.
