Worth remembering: the LA City Council increased the police budget, but diminished the firefighters' budget. Hollywood may tell us that police (and courts) solve 90% of crimes, but reality says that in California they solve 13.2% (in 2022). Social, not just environmental, safety nets are far cheaper and more effective. Politicians appealing to the lowest common denominator of public opinion may be nothing new, but it always has a cost.
