I’m still in shock over DSA member and nationally-endorsed candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s massive win Tuesday. She beat Joe Crowley, a ten-term machine politician, the fourth-ranking Democrat in Congress, and assumed successor to Nancy Pelosi, by 13%.
And how did she do it? By running on an unabashedly democratic socialist platform focused on healthcare for all, housing as a human right, abolishing ICE, justice for Puerto Rico, and a federal jobs guarantee. You can hear more in the DSA National Political Committee (NPC) statement below.
And she’s not our only DSA victory in Tuesday’s primaries. In Maryland, two candidates endorsed by Metro DC DSA won their primaries for the Maryland House of Delegates: Gabriel Acevero (District 39) and Vaughn Stewart (District 19). And in Colorado, locally-endorsed Julie Gonzales won her primary for State Senate in District 34. These victories are due to your hard work, coalition-building with our community allies, and the political mood of the country. We’re sick and tired of being sick and tired, and we're ready for a change!
All of these great candidates ran as proud, open democratic socialists. They’re changing political boundaries and pushing for real justice in working people’s lives. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was one of the first candidates to include abolishing ICE in her platform.
